Betreff: re: evaluation Dear
Alexandra,
I hope that you and Joachim and all of the staff at Treffpunkt
are well and enjoying the fall weather in Bamberg. The
summer heat has finally ended here (I hope) and perhaps
we can enjoy a pleasant autumn, which is the nicest time
of year in Alabama. I believe I told you that my wife,
Meg, is in the travel business, and we are going to a
travel conference in Buenos Aires in October, and then
to Africa in November. I am also trying to decide when
I might be able to return to Germany. I do intend to
continue my German study, so that some day I will be
able to comfortably converse with all of my former teachers
and friends at Treffpunkt.
Regarding my experience: Bamberg
is a wonderful place to stay and live and I would highly
recommend it to anyone. Being able to walk (and cycle)
to class and around the town (and such a beautiful town)
was great. There were always enjoyable things to do in
the town itself -I went to a couple of concerts and,
of course, drank lots of beer at Stammtisch and other
bars and Biergartens. The weekend excursions were lots
of fun, to Nurnberg (Joachim) and Regensburg (Beate)
and were also very good for my German speaking.
All of
my teachers - Armin and Sarah, and Helena and Norbert-
were great. I was very impressed with their competence
and enthusiasm. I felt that they were always well prepared
and were sincerely concerned with the progress being
made by each student. They were never in too much of
a hurry to be unwilling to answer questions after class
(and I always had questions).
A special comment which
might be of interest to a potential older student. I
am 64 but was always welcomed and included by the other
students, all of whom were much younger. Even outside
of class, while my days of dancing on tables at 3 a.m.
(and then getting up the next day for work or class)
are over, I participated in all of the class activities
and always felt that I was welcome. The other students,
in other words, were uniformly great, as were, of course,
the teachers.
Of course, the most important thing was
the German instruction. As I said, I think that the teachers
were very good and I certainly learned a tremendous amount
in the four weeks I stayed in Bamberg and studied at
Treffpunkt. I had little prior knowledge of German grammar
and so the material was especially helpful for me and
will always give me a good basis for future improvement.
I actually think that I do not have any
criticism. I did not observe the classes of the students
who were much better than I, so I cannot comment on them.
But I believe that I might consider the next time I come
taking one-on-one instruction, as that might help my
speaking ability. (I would probably recommend that anyone
who already has a good background in grammar enroll in
such one-on-one instruction)
Alexandra, please give my
best regards to everyone.Tell Dani hello and thank her
for all of her help.( I also intend to start jogging
again so I can join her on her 10K runs) As I said to
you, my wife and I would always welcome in our home anyone
from the school who might be visiting the States. (Just
give us an hours notice)
All the best. Bill North
