What Eoghan from Irland wrote: Bamberg, city of bells and bridges |
| North of Munich and east of Frankfurt, Bamberg is situated in the ancient
kingdom of Franken, over against the Check border.
Where the Frankish vinyards step down to the broad cornfields of the south, Bamberg straddles the river Regnitz and the Main-Danube canal and nestles among wooded hills. At the heart of this modern city the old town is an oasis of medieval charm. Cobblestone lanes twist between half-timbered houses like illustrations from The Pied Piper. Seemingly dozens of old churches chime the hours and leisurely strollers pause on bridges to hear the varied musical offerings of the buskers. More than fifty local breweries produce a wide variety of beers, and the local white wines are distinctive. Eating out is reasonably priced and there are many hostelries where guests can sample the local recipes outside in summer at pavement tables or in Biergartens. Pleasant walks take you to viewing points on the surrounding hilltops, where rereshments are usually available. Musical and theatrical performances are frequent, ranging from the high classical to the rollicking Irish pub. Dancing, swimming and a range of sports are available. Cyclists are facilitated by a system of cycle lanes throughout the city. The extensive pedestrian zone with its outdoor markets makes for a relaxed atmosphere for browsing and shopping. Bamberg has the feel of a safe and friendly town. |
