~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ July 2010 Hello Alexandra!! I have recently completed a two-week course at Sprachinstitut Treffpunkt in Bamberg. The course was rigorous and enjoyable. I came away having improved my language skills measurably and feeling much more confident in my speaking ability. The course materials are extremely good—thoughtful, sophisticated, and practical. Classroom instruction was great, with skilled, dedicated, and enthusiastic teachers. Homework, an hour or two per evening depending on your motivation, was valuable in reinforcing class work. My classmates were a varied lot, some studying for university credit, others to improve their employability, and some—like me—because they love the language and want to speak it more fluently. Everyone took the work seriously and contributed to a supportive learning environment, but classes were relaxed and fun as well as focused and to the point. Treffpunkt works hard to be a community rather than just a school; put another way, it is the best kind of school, one that functions as an effective learning community. The daily interaction and classroom instruction is friendly with lots of personal attention; the school schedules many different activities to help students (and faculty and administrators) get to know one another and to experience the cultural and popular life of the town—including weekly luncheons, an evening a week at a local beer garden, sports and outdoors activities, walks to local sights of interest, and more. Instructors and administrators are very much involved in the daily life of the school and always around and ready to engage in informal conversation. The school is conveniently located along the river/canal on the border between the old town pedestrian zone and a newer, more commercial area. Classrooms are comfortable, spacious, light and airy, and well-equipped. Computers are available for free-time internet connection. The old town and pedestrian area of Bamberg is relatively small, but I found much to see and do there and in the larger surrounding town and envi! rons. Finally, my boarding family was terrific, generous and friendly and completely committed to furthering my learning and immersion in German life. I have studied German, French and Spanish in a variety of settings but I have never had as good or successful an experience as I had at Sprachinstitut Treffpunkt. I highly recommend it! My Tips:
